Despite an estimated 750,000 people working in care home settings within the UK, the sector still faces a major labour shortage. The current vacancy rate stands at around 10%, a number which is set to increase as the UK’s aging population continues to grow. However, this does result in a sector which can offer plenty of opportunities and job security.  In this blog we take a look at the main duties of a Care Assistant working in a care home, uncovering what it might be like for those considering a career within the industry.

Undoubtedly, the role of a Care Worker is demanding; however, enhancing the daily lives of nearly 500,000 vulnerable service users across the UK also makes it one of the most gratifying professions available.

Duties of a Care Assistant

Ultimately the duties of a Care Assistant are determined by the needs of the individual. A person centred approach is applied, taking into consideration the varying health factors of each service user. In some cases, such as those living with Parkinson’s or Dementia, more specialised care is required.

However, there are a number of main duties that apply to all cases.

1) Personal Care

The personal care of an individual can vary from person to person dependant upon their needs. It may seem daunting to a new Care Assistant just starting out in their career, nevertheless personal care is an essential part of the role.

Good hygiene aids in reducing the risk of physical illness or infection, whilst also having a positive impact on the mental health of the individual.

Some examples of personal care would be –

2) General Household Tasks

It is not uncommon for Care Workers to assist with the general cleanliness and hygiene standards within a care home.

Tasks may include –

3) Medication and Health Monitoring

Constant supervision is crucial to maintaining a service user’s health.

Regular checks may include –

Those that are trained to do so will also administer any medication that is required.

4) Record Keeping and Administration

Communication and record keeping is another one of the vital duties of a Care Assistant. Any checks that are carried out should be noted, along with any change in condition and any care given. Any significant or concerning changes must be reported to a Senior Carer or Manager.

5) Emotional and Well Being Support

Moving out of your family home and into a care facility can be very distressing for some individuals. Their world will have changed significantly; the loss of an independent lifestyle, living in a new environment, being separated from loved ones and potentially coping with an illness can all have an impact on their emotions and well being.

Taking the time to get to know the ‘person’ rather than the ‘resident’ will have a huge impact on their mental health. Therefore, simply having a conversation with someone, asking them about themselves and their lives, learning about their likes and dislikes and understanding their personality will provide the companionship and emotional support needed.

6) Physical Mobility Support

Service users may have reduced mobility, this could be anywhere from being unsteady when walking to requiring the use of a wheelchair. The role of a Care Assistant is to aid mobility but also to empower individuals to complete tasks independently.

Staying as active as possible is a great way to help prevent future injuries and strengthen joints and should be encouraged as much as possible. There are great fun ways to stay active such as dancing, gardening or chair yoga!

7) Hobbies and Leisure

The benefits of leisure activities within a care home are countless. Not only can they help with mobility, but they also play a huge role in the positive well being of residents. Activities could include painting, cooking, playing instruments, bingo, taking trips, arts and crafts and much more – take a look at some ideas here

8 ) Eating and Drinking

Encouraging a healthy balanced diet, making sure food is prepared correctly for the resident and assisting where needed is all part of the duties of a Care Assistant.
